Loehe Library at ULC
University Lutheran Chapel is blessed to have an excellent theological library with books covering a wide-ranging field of topics. Our library's greatest strength, of course, is in the area of Lutheran history and theology. We also have large sections for patristic studies, liturgical theology, exegetical theology, comparative religion, Christian living, and a host of other subjects.
Loehe Library is named after the 19th century German pastor, Johann Konrad Wilhelm Loehe. Pastor of the Lutheran Church in the small town of Neuendettelsau, Rev. Loehe was one of the most important figures in the 19th century confessional Lutheran revival. He is famous for his liturgical and theological studies, for establishing a variety of social ministries in Neuendettelsau, including a deaconess house and orphanage, and for sending missionaries overseas. He was responsible for sending pastors to North America, Australia, New Guinea, Brazil, and the Ukraine. He was also influential, though from afar, in the creation of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and in the founding of Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
