St. Ignatius of Antioch

Session 9 – The Letter to the Smyrnaens

How does Ignatius know that the Smyrnaeans are so solidly in the Faith?

What heresy is he writing against here?

Why does he say those who hold to this heresy are “incorporeal and demonic”; and what will become of them?

What is the Church’s response to be in regard to heretics, according to Ignatius?

Note the connection Ignatius makes between the heretics, their actions within in the community, and Holy Communion. Why are these so closely bound together?

Why does Ignatius tie the validity of the sacraments to the bishop? Is this correct?

Again, as in the letter to the Philadelphians, Ignatius speaks of the prayers on behalf of the Syrian Church. Now he says that they are again entering a haven of peace. To what do you suppose he might be referring?
